The Little Prince Review: Exploration of Loneliness and Love

We spend our entire lives coexisting with loneliness; this isn’t just sentimental whining, but something many adults carry deep within their hearts. As human beings, we exist as independent individuals, yet we are also bound to the community. We need the practicalities of daily life, and we also need a deep connection with one another. Yet in the world of adulthood, people grow increasingly distant from one another, until eventually this distance becomes a void—a virtual reality that transforms into a loneliness that cuts to the bone.

In The Little Prince, you can find an outlet for this loneliness. The Little Prince’s journey through the stars takes this invisible loneliness and transforms it into a tangible reality. Every person he meets resembles an adult trapped in a circle of solitude. Each of them appears to lead a fulfilling life, clinging to a steadfast purpose, yet this purpose is nothing more than a self-imposed shackle. They live only within their own small worlds, unwilling to approach others or allow others to approach them. Even within the same universe, they remain isolated from one another, their paths never crossing. The entire world is barren and cold—doesn’t this closely resemble the reality of so many of us? But the Little Prince is different from these people. He is not consumed by loneliness; he always carries a spark of care and tenderness in his heart, seeking a path to resolve his loneliness—and the solution lies in love and connection.

His first concern was the proud yet fragile rose on his own planet. That rose was prickly, argumentative, and adept at hiding her needs—just like each of us, clumsy in matters of the heart yet longing to be cherished. The Little Prince cared for her, shielding her from the wind with a glass dome, patiently listening to her petty complaints, and even when her rose-speak was sharp and biting, he met her gaze with all his heart and waited. That rose was originally just one of countless ordinary roses in the universe, but because he spent time on her, poured his heart into her, and cherished her with all his soul, she became a one-of-a-kind, irreplaceable rose. Love is never about how beautiful the other person is; love is about our willingness to invest our hearts and souls, transforming this bond into a weight that is uniquely our own.

It wasn’t until he met the fox that the Little Prince understood what love truly was. The fox taught him the meaning of taming—to actively draw near, to approach the other with sincerity, to respond with care, and to gradually set the two of them apart from the bustling crowd. Though they were once strangers, by choosing to invest time, to give of themselves wholeheartedly, and to be present for one another, they slowly made their way into each other’s hearts. From then on, even the most ordinary scenery was filled with warmth, and even the most mundane days glowed with a gentle light; those fleeting moments of togetherness became unique imprints shared only by the two of them.

As I close this novel, the Little Prince seems to be right before my eyes. Sitting on his little planet, he watches the serene sunset, often thinking of the rose he has taken responsibility for caring for, remembering his promise to the fox, and recalling that truth about taming. Saint-Exupéry’s novel is as simple as can be, devoid of any embellishment, yet it cuts straight to the loneliness in every adult’s heart, understanding that unspoken solitude and isolation. We have always carried a foundation of loneliness; love and connection are the light that illuminates this foundation. They soothe the loneliness, shatter the barriers, and ensure that even amidst a sea of people, we are no longer alone.
