Have you ever met someone who spoke beautifully, said all the right things, and seemed genuine – only to have them switch up on you later? You’re not alone. Many of us have been fooled by smooth talkers. So how do you actually tell someone’s real intentions?
The answer may surprise you. People always tell you who they are – just not in the way you think. You have to learn how to pick up on certain clues. It’s not what people say they love that reveals their heart posture. Because someone can say they value honesty, claim they love God, or praise spirituality out loud, yet their actions and words in private tell a completely different story.
Technically, what comes out of their mouth isn’t always the full picture. But here’s the key: over time, your mouth is always loyal to what your heart holds. As it says in the Bible, out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. When you speak, you leak – and that leak is the truth about your heart.
There are three specific things to watch for that reveal a person’s true intentions more clearly than anything else. Pay attention to what they brag about, what they complain about, and what they criticize.
1. What they brag about reveals where their identity is rooted.
People will always boast and brag about the things they believe give them value. If someone is constantly boasting about their knowledge, their accolades, their success, their spirituality, or even their sacrifices, that’s proof that their identity is grounded in those things. That’s where their heart is anchored. The Bible addresses this directly in Jeremiah 9:23-24, where it warns against boasting in human achievements and instead points us to what truly matters. When someone exalts themselves or their accomplishments, it reveals what they worship – and it’s often not what they claim.
2. What they complain about reveals what they believe they deserve.
Complaining is never just about the surface issue. When someone complains, it reveals entitlement – a belief that they deserved better, that their expectations should have been met, that life or others owe them something. If someone constantly complains about others, about their circumstances, or about not being recognized, it shows a heart posture of dissatisfaction and self-focus. Their complaints act like a window into what they think they’re owed, and that tells you a lot about their character over time.
3. What they criticize reveals what they judge and where they stand.
Pay close attention to what people criticize and judge. The things they speak against often expose their own insecurities, values, or hidden agendas. Criticism is rarely just about the other person – it’s a reflection of the critic’s internal framework. Jesus was incredibly skilled at reading hearts, and He was never impressed with religious talk, public prayer, moral performance, or even eloquent vocabulary. He saw past the words and straight into intention. He understood that what proceeds out of the mouth comes from the heart, and the heart always reveals itself eventually.
Some people seem kind when you meet them, but later on it all switches up. Why? Because their true heart posture eventually leaks out through boasting, complaining, and criticism. The mouth can perform for a while, but it cannot hide what the heart truly treasures. Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks – and that truth always rises to the surface.
So the next time you’re trying to read someone, don’t just listen to the praises or the polished words. Watch what they brag about, listen to what they complain about, and notice what they criticize. That is where their real intentions live. That is who they truly are.
