Man, these kids are so disrespectful. No, they’re not—they’re right.

You played in your child’s face for the last time. They finally snapped, lit you up with facts, and you don’t know how to handle that? They didn’t disrespect you. They read you, and that’s what happened.

Oh, they didn’t have to use that tone with me? Yes, they did. You’ve had that coming for years. A respectful tone didn’t work. Sir and ma’am didn’t work. Now you’ve got to be called out?

When Your Child Speaks Back in a Harsh Tone, It Might Not Be Disrespect

Why Children Reach a Breaking Point

At a certain point, you can no longer rank your way out of accountability. Being a parent doesn’t mean you’re always right. Your children are still human beings, and they have their own feelings and perspectives.

When a child finally speaks up, it’s often because they’ve been holding things in for a long time. They’ve tried the respectful tone—it didn’t work. They’ve tried the polite approach—it was ignored. So eventually, they say what they actually think, in whatever tone they can muster. And suddenly, the parent wants to talk about “tone” instead of the truth.

Accountability Goes Both Ways

Some parents have to start giving out apologies and explanations if they want a relationship with their children—and grandchildren. If you’ve dismissed your child’s feelings for years, don’t be surprised when they stop coming to you for comfort or connection. Relationships aren’t built on hierarchy alone.

And if you want to be cared for in your old age, you might want to start caring now. You want to be on your deathbed calling for your children and nobody answers? Then act right. Listen to your kids.

Listen to Your Children

Stop calling your children disrespectful just because they told you how they felt and it was true. I’m not talking about minor children using a disrespectful tone, and I’m not endorsing cursing parents out. But at a certain point, your children have a breaking point—so listen to your children.
