Body language doesn’t lie. Watch the signs. Our bodies do things subconsciously that can tell us what’s really happening—regardless of what people say out of their mouths.
Here are some common gestures and what they usually mean.
Hand Gestures
Hands behind the back. When someone puts their hands behind their back, they feel safe and confident. It’s a power pose—they’re in control.
Cracking fingers. If you see somebody constantly cracking their fingers while speaking, that’s stress talking. They’re nervous or uncomfortable, even if they’re trying to hide it.
Covering their mouth while talking. That’s a subconscious lie indicator. If they’re talking to you while partially covering their mouth, they could be hiding the truth or something they don’t want to fully reveal.
Eyes and Mouth
Looking left or right while talking. If a person looks left or right when they’re speaking, they might be lying or creating a story. Watch their eyes—they don’t lie.
Blinking a lot. During a conversation, if someone is blinking a lot, they’re probably not into what you’re saying. Their brain is trying to escape.
Pursed lips or pressed lips. When someone purses their lips, it usually means they’re holding back an opinion—they’re not fully speaking their truth.

Body Position and Distance
Crossed arms. This often signals defensiveness or being closed off. But sometimes people are just cold—so don’t read too much into any single signal.
Feet pointed away from you. If someone’s feet are pointed away from you, they want to leave the conversation ASAP. Feet are often more honest than the face.
Mirroring your body language. When someone mirrors your posture or movements, they are subconsciously saying: “I’m with you. I’m on your side.” That’s a yes.
Checking watch or phone constantly. Boredom alert. You lost them somewhere between your first sentence and now.
Hair and Jewelry
Playing with their hair or jewelry. This can mean nervousness or flirtation. Depends on the context—and context matters. Some people just have habits.
The Bigger Picture
Our bodies have so much more control than we think. And our brains do things subconsciously that reveal what’s really happening, regardless of what we say out loud.
Pay attention. Body language does not lie. Watch the signs.
