If you’ve ever felt like people don’t see your value, I want to tell you a story.

The Useless Tree

There’s an old Taoist story about a massive tree that stood beside a road for generations. Its branches spread wide enough to shade travelers for miles. Its trunk was enormous. But for some reason, no carpenter would cut it down.

One day, an apprentice asked his teacher why such a large tree would go untouched when all of the trees around it had been cut down and made into houses. The old carpenter laughed and said, “That tree is considered useless. Its wood is too twisted to straighten. It’s too rough to work with. No one wanted it.”

And because no one wanted it, the tree grew ancient. Its roots reached deeper every year. Its branches stretched wide across the sky. While other trees were cut down and carried away in pieces, this one was allowed to remain whole.

Why Being Overlooked Might Be Your Greatest Protection

What This Means for You

I think about this story because some people spend years believing that something is wrong with them just because they don’t fit a mold that the world calls normal. They’re too different, too quiet, too emotional, too unconventional. Slowly, they begin to think that these are flaws.

But if you’ve spent your life feeling unseen, maybe the world doesn’t know what to do with the depth in you. Not everything that’s valuable can be recognized by an average person. Some people carry something ancient in them—a quiet strength, a way of seeing, a heart that refuses to become hard no matter what happens.

And because the world couldn’t use it, label it, or profit from it, they thought it wasn’t valuable.

The Truth About Your Value

If you hear nothing I say but one thing, hear this: your value is never determined by how easily someone else could use you.

Some people bloom because they refuse to become what the world expected. And they stayed protected because they were never shaped by the wrong hands. Sometimes the parts of you that seemed least valuable in one season become the very reason your life continues to grow.
