Narcissism exists on a spectrum. At one end, you might see someone who is superficial and attention-seeking. At the other end, you find severe manipulation and menace. Understanding the different types can help you recognize patterns and protect your energy.
1. The Grandiose Narcissist
This is the classic narcissist—the preening, arrogant, pretentious, attention-seeking type. They can be the life of the party, a stellar CEO on stage, charming and “get it done.” They demand attention and often achieve success, but it’s driven by a need for admiration, not genuine connection. They’re fun at times, but everything revolves around them.
2. The Vulnerable Narcissist
The flip side of the grandiose type is the vulnerable narcissist. Sullen, resentful, victimized, aggrieved, and passive-aggressive. They walk around with a “poor me, poor me” attitude, convinced that the world owes them something and that they’re never given a fair chance. They can be quite cruel and vindictive—there’s a poison to their anger.

3. The Communal Narcissist
These folks get their validation by being perceived as saviors and do-gooders. They do all the charitable, helpful things—but not out of genuine commitment to the cause. They need to be seen and celebrated. If no one notices how wonderful they are, they’ll go dark quickly. They want the credit. They want the award.
4. The Self-Righteous Narcissist
Often doesn’t even clock as a narcissist. They’re hyper-moral, judgmental, rigid, and cold. They’re obsessed with rules and order—often to the detriment of the human beings around them. This is the person who demands perfection and shames anyone who falls short. They make you feel like you’re wrong for being human.
5. The Neglectful Narcissist
This person views everyone through an instrumental lens: What function do you serve for me? They pay attention when they need something, but they have no genuine interest in intimacy or closeness. Conversations feel hollow. Interactions feel empty. They’re not connected—they’re just extracting.
6. The Malignant Narcissist
The most severe manifestation. Here you see far more severe manipulation, coercion, exploitiveness, isolation, and menace. Malignant narcissism is the last stop on the train before psychopathy station. It’s terrifying, and it’s quite severe.
These Types Can Mix
These types aren’t mutually exclusive. You can have a malignant vulnerable narcissist, a grandiose communal narcissist, and so on. The subtypes line up in different combinations, which makes spotting them more complicated—but also more important.
