Someone asked me how to be more well spoken—and I want to share what I feel like I’ve naturally become without even trying.

Being well spoken is not a performance. It’s actually an understanding of what you think. And in order to know what you think, you need to read a lot, reflect on experiences, and you need to write.

The Foundation of Clear Speech Is Clear Thinking

Being well spoken isn’t about using big words—it’s about knowing what you actually think. Journaling is a powerful tool for this. You don’t need to be articulate or make it pretty. You just need to reflect on your experiences and uncover what you think. When you’ve already done the work of figuring out your thoughts in your own time, you can speak smoothly and with clarity when someone asks a question.

How to Be More Well Spoken Without Pretending

Write, Reflect, and Rehearse

If you can get into a constant habit of writing out your thoughts, you’ll slowly uncover what you truly think and feel. This is the foundation of confident expression.

If journaling isn’t for you, try recording yourself. Just talk—about what you’re learning, what you’re obsessed with, how you feel about a topic. This helps you practice thinking on your feet and refining your natural speaking rhythm.

Keep It Simple

The sign of truly understanding a topic is being able to explain it to someone who’s never heard of it. Prioritize simple, clear language over big words. Simplicity is what makes your message land. Your vocabulary can grow over time, but clarity comes from knowing what you want to say and saying it plainly.

Read and Listen Widely

Read anything—books, articles, Substack newsletters. Listen to podcasts, YouTube videos, experts in fields you’re curious about. Get a variety of sources so you can deepen your understanding and broaden your perspective. When you truly understand something from multiple angles, you naturally sound more confident and articulate.

Give Yourself Grace

Don’t be too hard on yourself. Let yourself stumble and practice. Being well spoken isn’t about perfection—it’s about being connected to what you say on a heart level. That sincerity will always come through to the other person.
