Here are three ways to read someone’s body language. These signals can help you understand what people are really feeling—whether in dating, conversations, or everyday interactions.
1. Pay Attention to People’s Hands
In dating and attraction, if a woman takes her hand and moves the hair off of her neck, that’s usually a good sign that she’s actually into you.
Here’s the psychology behind it: when a person is attracted to someone, their basal body temperature rises just slightly. The subconscious mind reacts by trying to cool that person off, so they expose the neck. At the same time, exposing the inside of the wrist—a physically vulnerable part of the body—subconsciously signals that they feel safe with you.
On the other hand, if they’re leaning back and covering their neck or wrists, that’s a different story. Covering those vulnerable areas often indicates that they don’t feel safe, or they’ve just experienced some type of stress response relative to whatever the conversation is at that point.

2. Watch Their Mouth
Pretty much anytime in a conversation, if you see somebody pursing their lips together, pressing their lips, or doing any similar behavior, it usually means there is some type of withheld opinion—they’re not fully speaking their truth. They might be holding something back.
This is a subtle but consistent signal. The mouth is often the first place tension shows up when someone is filtering their words or deciding whether to share what they really think.
3. Pay Attention to Their Proximity
If the conversation goes in a certain direction and they lean in, they’re feeling it—they feel open, more vulnerable, and connected to you around that topic. Leaning in is a sign of engagement and trust.
Conversely, if their proximity gets farther away, they’re subconsciously distancing their body from that topic. This can also happen through objects—they might pick up a drink or place something between the two of you to create a barrier. That’s a form of physical distancing that mirrors emotional distancing.
