This is the part that will make everything make sense—everything you couldn’t understand before.

What They Actually Fear

What avoidants will never tell you is that they are more afraid of the experience of watching you give up on them or leave them than they are of letting you down. This is how attachment starts to reveal itself. When someone is more concerned with losing you than they are with letting you down, it tells you everything you need to know: they are loving you based on how you make them feel, not for who you really are.

Why It Starts So Strong

This is why at the beginning they come on so strong—the crazy honeymoon phase, everything clicks, they’re super vulnerable, super consistent. It’s because that supports the story they have of themselves. Anything opposing that disrupts their self-awareness, their self-worth, the value they’ve built in themselves before connecting with you.

One thing you never realize, because you’re so caught up in the moment, is that they never stopped protecting themselves. You made the mistake of seeing their effort as decision—being chosen. You saw their consistency as intention. But you didn’t understand that you were just very accommodating to their nervous system.

Why Avoidants Pull Away The Truth They Won't Tell You

Why the Shift Happens

In the early stages of the relationship, you haven’t yet become a factor that causes dysregulation. You haven’t become a person that challenges their viewpoints, their decision-making, or their character. This is why there’s no room for gray or stillness in these experiences with avoidants. You find yourself attaching meaning to the intensity, and that intensity masks itself to you as security, as comfort, as being chosen.

This is why the chemistry and connection has an extreme high at the beginning—and then an abrupt shift to an extreme low.

When You Become Aware

Once you become aware of their patterns and see through the things that don’t align with who they told you they were, you become a liability to them. If you decide to express yourself and let them know you’ve noticed this, they won’t focus on whether they let you down. They won’t focus on the impact they’ve had on you. They won’t focus on reconciliation.

Instead, there’s a huge shift in their nervous system that tells them: “I am being betrayed. I am being judged. I am being overlooked. I am being misunderstood. This person doesn’t align with what I thought they were.”

What They Will Never Admit

They will secretly spiral and start obsessively thinking: “Are you going to hold this over my head? Are you going to compare me to others? Are you giving up on me? Is this going to cause you to leave me?”

This is the person they will eventually detach from, feel triggered by, stonewall, cut off, and discard. After some time, they build a new storyline—not about the person who accommodated them, but about the one who challenged their story.

The Final Truth

If you’ve been picking up what I’ve been putting down, here’s the final piece: they’re not going to fear letting you down. They’re not even going to fear losing this version of you. They’re going to be more afraid of losing the person and the potential they saw in that person.

That is the story of the avoidant dynamic in a relationship. That’s what they’ll never tell you.
