Have you ever had a kid ask you why the sky is blue and you just kind of froze? You’re not alone. Kids have an amazing way of asking questions that sound simple but turn out to be secretly complicated. And “why is the sky blue” is one of the classics.
Here’s the deal. The sky’s colour all comes down to light. Light from the sun may look white to us, but it’s actually a mix of all the colours of the rainbow. And each of those colours travels in waves. Some waves are long and chill, like red and orange, while others are short and bouncy, like blue.

When sunlight hits our atmosphere, it meets a bunch of tiny gas particles. And blue light, because of those short waves, gets scattered around way more than the other colours. It’s like blue light just can’t help but bounce around all over the place, filling up the whole sky. So when you look up, all that scattered blue light is what you see. That’s why the sky is blue during the day—it’s the blue light from the sun bouncing around in every direction.
Sunsets turn red and orange for the same reason.
And here’s a little extra fun fact to impress with. Sunrises and sunsets are more orange and red because the sun’s light has to pass through more of the atmosphere. So by the time it reaches us, most of that blue light has scattered away, leaving behind warm reds and oranges.
